Review of paper computers-2658948

Researching “Authority Transfer According to a Driver Intervention Intention Considering Coexistence of Communication Delay” is a niche topic in the automotive and computer sectors because it gives to those interested in develo** the automated driving algorithms, an idea regarding the procedures and factors which must be considered when using autonomous driving and spontaneous road traffic. The evolution of computers and vehicle controllability are somehow connected, both offering new possibilities for processing data and interactions between users and vehicles with the support of multiple interfaces. Teleoperation and communication delays in this process occur when switch of control is realized, and the servers present communication latency.

Introduction

Does the introduction provide sufficient background information for readers not in the immediate field to understand the problem / hypotheses?

Yes. The first section of the paper indicates the state of the art in autonomous and teleoperation of vehicles, as well as the risks and necessity for improving controllability through compensation of the delay in data transfer. Autonomous driving is seen as unstable and not highly reliable; thus, the teleoperation is considered as an option.

Are the reasons for performing the study clearly defined?

The reason for develo** the research is to fill the gaps in what is missing from the field, because there are many studies on how to do teleoperation, but not many studies deal with communication delays that occur when switching control.

Are the study objectives clearly defined?

Yes. The main objective is to solve the problem through teleoperation by taking control of the vehicle in situations where the driver needs to intervene, such as hardware, software, and emergencies in which the autonomous vehicle is driving on the road.

What is the main question addressed by the research?

There are multiple important questions, as follows: Can be made a way of driving the vehicle safely and just when it is needed expressly? Is there a way of teleoperating the vehicles?

The main question being: Is there a method to deal with communication delays that occur when switching control?

2. Literature Review and Model Development

Is the literature cited balanced or are there important studies not cited, or other studies disproportionately cited?

The cited literature in this work includes 29 titles and is related to the topics of scalability in perception for autonomous driving, Self-driving cars and criminal liability, road safety with self-driving vehicles and haptic shared control.

Please identify statements that are missing any citations, or that have an insufficient number of citations, given the strength of the claim made.

-

Do you consider the topic original or relevant in the field? Does it address a specific gap in the field?

Yes. It is relevant. The research makes a progress with the proposed way to solve the problem of the autonomous vehicle through teleoperation in situations where the driver needs to intervene.

3. Methodology and Data

Are the methodology and data used appropriate to the purpose of the research?

Yes.

Is sufficient information provided for a capable researcher to reproduce the experiments described?

May be further developed.

Are any additional experiments required to validate the results of those that were performed?

Yes. Further experimentation would provide more data regarding the teleoperation and combination with autonomous driving.

Are there any additional experiments that would greatly improve the quality of this paper?

Yes. Experiments in different scenarios with switch of control between autonomous driving and teleoperation would benefit the development and research of these technologies.

Are appropriate references cited where previously established methods are used?

Yes

4. Results

Are the results clearly explained and presented in an appropriate format?

Yes

Do the figures and tables show essential data or are there any that could easily be summarized in the text?

Yes.

Are any of the data duplicated in the graphics and/or text?

No.

Are the figures and tables easy to interpret?

May be further developed and refined.

Are there any additional graphics that would add clarity to the text?

Maybe.

Have appropriate statistical methods been used to determine the significance of the results?

Yes.

What does it add to the subject area compared with other published material?

The research applies simulation to gain data regarding the process of teleoperation in some situations of autonomous driving. The proposed method compensates for communication delays and allows for stable teleoperation through smoother control transfer

5. Conclusions and Implications

Are all possible interpretations of the data considered or are there alternative hypotheses that are consistent with the available data?

The discussions supported by the simulation results are offered in chapter 5. The interpretations may be further developed.

Are the findings properly described in the context of the published literature?

Yes.

Are the limitations of the study discussed? If not, what are the major limitations that should be discussed?

The limitations of the study should be further described, as well as the future developments of the research.

What specific improvements should the authors consider regarding the methodology? What further controls should be considered?

-

Are the conclusions consistent with the evidence and arguments presented and do they address the main question posed?

Yes. The conclusion part should be further defined with statistical analysis.

Are the conclusions of the study supported by appropriate evidence or are the claims exaggerated?

Conclusions are supported by the simulations and data gain as results. The improvement of autonomous vehicles brings much more functionalities with safety improvement (if delays are reduced). The findings should be quantified and proposed for implementation.

Are the references appropriate?

Yes

Significance and Novelty

Are the claims in the paper sufficiently novel to warrant publication?

Yes.

Does the study represent a conceptual advance over previously published work?

Yes, it does, by presenting the scheme for a flexible multi-keyword ranked semantic search.

Journal Selection

Is the target journal (if known) appropriate? If not, why not?

Yes

What is the likely target audience of this paper?

This scientific paper is useful mainly to computer and server communication staff who need data regarding remote operation and networking; to network experts, computer technicians, software and automotive experts.

Comments and Suggestions for Authors

The authors did not specify the title of the journal but I think that “Computers” will be an appropriate target for publishing this study.

The scope of this journal contains many topics (https://mdpi.longhoe.net/journal/computers/about) and I found some similar research areas like “communications and control”, “artificial intelligence”, “interdisciplinary applications” etc.

I also found papers published in “Computers” with similar topics.

By this occasion, I think that the literature background should be better connected with this journal considering some papers from “Computers”. For example, using the keyword “autonomous vehicle” we can find 7 papers from “Computers” including 3 from the present year. This is a good occasion to slightly refresh (actualize) the references list.

Apart from the above, I evaluate this manuscript highly. The topic is interesting. The construction is correct and clear. The results are understandable and valid for other studies. The discussion and conclusion give a worth information.

I found some editorial problems. For example, starting sentences with a small letter. Please check the whole manuscript carefully and make the corrections.

In conclusion, I recommend publishing this manuscript after consideration of all of the reviewers’ remarks.

Comments and Suggestions for Authors

Dear Author,

I have carefully reviewed your article entitled " Authority Transfer According to a Driver Intervention Intention Considering Coexistence of Communication Delay" submitted to our journal. This study deals with teleoperation and presents a way to switch control from autonomous vehicles to remote drivers focusing on the realm of communication delays that occur when switching control. However, there are a few concerns as suggested below for authors consideration:

1.       Formatting errors at several places. For example, line 11/12 ‘this study, Examines …’; Line 13,  15, 18

2.       Authors should carefully improve the English language throughout the manuscript.

3.       Teleoperation might open several new threats with regards to cyber security. Authors should consider elaborating on their thoughts on such threats which are particularly important for autonomous driving.

4.       It is unclear if the autonomous vehicle considered in this study has a driver in it. Teleoperation will have several conflicting scenarios in such a case. Or is teleoperation only required in the case of full automation (level 5)?

5.       What are the applications in which large scale deployment of Teleoperation will be practical? Does such a system require additional infrastructure and human need?

6.       How are communication delays impacted in various driving conditions – rain, snow, poor internet connectivity regions? These are actual driving conditions. This might remain the biggest gap in the current setup of the presented study. Authors should consider discussing the limitations of the study.
