Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The emergence of micro- and nanorobotics has the potential to improve targeted medical interventions. To enable the remote control and manipulation of such small robots, researchers are develo** external actuation mechanisms such as light, magnetic fields, acoustic waves, and electric fields. Although each actuation method has its merits, their application is based on the fundamental design principles of micro- and nanorobots (length scale, morphology, material, and function) as well as the specific application, such as targeted drug delivery to cancer cells, thrombolysis, or microsurgery. Recent innovations in external control include the hybrid use of wireless actuation fields, such as acoustic and magnetic fields, which represents a complementary actuation approach. In addition, hybrid actuation methods can enable simultaneous manipulation (i.e., powering, steering, trap**, controlling, and sensing) and activation of the target function (e.g., drug release, hyperthermia, microsurgery) of micro/nanorobots. Despite the success of externally actuated micro- and nanorobots in the laboratory, practical, easy-to-use actuation systems are required that can be seamlessly translated to the clinical setting and integrated with existing imaging modalities.

This Special Issue seeks novel research papers focusing on various external actuation mechanisms for micro- and nanobots. We welcome contributions on recent developments in this field, as well as perspective and review articles on the topic of "Externally Actuated Micro- and Nanorobots for Medical Interventions".
