Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The goal of achieving stable and reliable non-classical photon sources might be useful for different research fields, such as metrology or quantum communication, and is demanding in several quantum computation schemes.

Quantum technologies would greatly benefit from a standard technology for single photon sources and many promising systems have been developed in the last years. In this framework, solid state single photon emitters (SS-SPE) play a key role, due to their scalability and easiness of integration in photonic devices. Diverse types of SS-SPE have been proposed in literature, from atomic defects in crystalline structures to quantum dots and 2D materials, just to mention some of them. Unfortunately, for most of the mentioned systems the performances are typically limited in terms of collection efficiency and decay rate.

The increasing ability to fabricate structures at the nanoscale by more and more accurate lithographic and material growth techniques have opened the opportunity to tailor the photonic environment surrounding an emitter to engineer its emissive properties, in terms of radiation pattern, as well as decay rate.

The Special Issue of the journal of Applied Science “Nanostructures for Single Photon Emitters” aims to provide an overview on recent advances in the development of SS-SPE and the improvements of their performances.
