Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Microorganisms colonize a variety of aquatic and terrestrial habitats, where they are involved in carbon and nutrient fluxes, acting as drivers of ecosystem functioning. In spite of their small size, bacteria, fungi, and microalgae are still unexploited sources of novel metabolites and bioactive natural products with wide industrial applications, due to their structural and functional diversity. On the other hand, understanding the potential threats posed by microorganisms to human and animal health is equally crucial.

This Special Issue aims to improve current knowledge on the use of microorganisms for bioprospecting or bioremediation purposes, focusing on the multi-faceted features related to microbial biotechnologies and their health and economic advantages. This represents a field of growing interest to scientists and stakeholders. In addition, emerging threats related to distribution patterns and sources of pathogenic and antibiotic-resistant bacteria, as well as harmful algae that can adversely impact ecosystem quality, will be addressed, paying attention to the environmental drivers that may affect their occurrence in natural environments.

Original research articles and reviews dealing with the dual role of microorganisms as a resource and a threat are welcome. Research areas may include (but not limited to) the following:

  • Microbial biotechnology;
  • Bioprospecting;
  • Bioremediation;
  • Microbial metabolites, bioactive compounds, and enzymes;
  • Emerging pathogens;
  • Antibiotic resistant bacteria;
  • Harmful algae.

Looking forward to receiving valuable contributions.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at mdpi.longhoe.net by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Microorganisms is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2700 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
