Subtropical coral reefs such as the lagoonal reefs of Norfolk Island in the remote South Pacific are vastly understudied, with many benthic species unrecorded in the scientific literature. Here we report on ascidian populations from 2021 to 2023 at Norfolk Islands inshore reefs. Quantitative assessments spanning that period were conducted to assess ascidian presence, cover, and benthic interactions. We show ascidian cover remained persistently low and stable across the lagoonal reefs during the study period. We find adjacent reef site, Cemetery Bay showed variation in ascidian cover over time, where we measure a 3.2-fold increase in cover over 2 years. Ascidians were associated primarily with sand and sediment substrates at all reef locations. Recorded interactions between hard corals and ascidians were low. This study provides valuable insights into the population dynamics of ascidians within subtropical reef ecosystems. Ongoing ascidian population monitoring can provide a comprehensive understanding of ascidian dynamics whilst also providing insight of theimpact of anthropogenic stressors on benthic communities. Together, this can aid in informing management and conservation strategies for subtropical reefs.

This pilot study provides insights into the Moroccan public’s understanding and willingness to engage in insect pollinator preservation, highlighting widespread awareness alongside significant knowledge gaps. The success of biodiversity conservation efforts, especially those aimed at insect pollinators, is greatly enhanced by an informed and committed populace. Understanding public perceptions of insect pollinators is important as it shapes the effectiveness of conservation strategies and their implementation. Although our pilot study does not include every demographic of Moroccan society, it does include an important portion of the populace: educated urban youth. This is a key portion of the population that will be crucial in develo** future conservation strategies, especially given the tendency towards increasing urbanization putting cities at the forefront of sustainable development. Our study aimed to assess opinions on insect pollinators, their services, and their declining population numbers in Morocco. We conducted a survey distributed mainly through the media over four months, receiving responses from 301 individuals. The results indicate that the public is aware of decreasing insect pollinator populations and their main threats, and shows a willingness to participate in conservation strategies. However, gaps persist in understanding the roles and ecology of pollinators. While honey bees and bumble bees are well-recognized for their role in pollinating agricultural and wild plants, there is less awareness about other common pollinators such as solitary bees and flies. Additionally, the essential contributions of non-bee pollinators remain widely overlooked. To address these findings, we recommend implementing specialized educational initiatives to increase public understanding of the vital functions of non-bee pollinators in supporting ecosystem services. In order to adopt a more encompassing strategy for the conservation of insect pollinators, upcoming outreach efforts within the national biodiversity strategy should emphasize the contributions made by lesser-known non-bee insect pollinators and strive to engage sectors of the population currently less involved in pollinator conservation. However, while this pilot study provides valuable insights, the sample size limits the generalizability of these conclusions. Future research with larger and more diverse samples would be beneficial to validate and expand upon these findings in order to provide a more comprehensive understanding of all areas of public perception and engagement in pollinator conservation in Morocco. Expanding sampling to include older, less educated, and less urban demographics would strengthen these initial insights and broaden their application, especially beyond urban attitudes.

The increasing prevalence of species that are detrimental to biodiversity is a major concern, particularly for managers of national parks. To develop effective programmes for controlling weeds, it is essential to have a thorough understanding of the extent and severity of infestations, as well as the contributing factors such as temperature, rainfall, and disturbance. Predicting these factors on a regional scale requires models that can incorporate a wide range of variables in a quantifiable manner, while also assisting with on-ground operations. In this study, we present two Bayesian Network models specifically designed for six significant weed species found along the southern coast of Australia. Our models are based on empirical data collected during a coastal weed survey conducted in 2015 and repeated in 2016. We applied these models to the coastal national parks in the isolated and pristine East Gippsland region. Importantly, the prediction models were developed at two different spatial scales that directly corresponded to the scale of the observations. Our findings indicate that coastal habitats, with their vulnerable environments and prevalence of open dune systems, are particularly susceptible to weed infestations. Moreover, adjacent regions also have the potential for colonization if these infestations are not effectively controlled. Climate-related factors play a role in moderating the potential for colonization, which is a significant concern for weed control efforts in the context of global climate change.

The studies on the bioinvasion phenomenon focus mainly on the biological and ecological traits of a species, while scattered literature is addressed to a correct systematic assessment and an updated geographical distribution on the whole. It is noteworthy that non-indigenous species should be monitored on both sides of their range, i.e., towards the front of dispersal and beyond the original range. The backside range boundaries are not often monitored or well delimited; thus, the novel global distribution of an invasive taxon is not often accurately delimitated. A model species for highlighting criticisms about the scarce knowledge on the novel range was chosen. Brachidontes pharaonis is a mussel that has successfully colonised the Mediterranean Sea, following an immigration pathway through the Suez Canal from the Red Sea, presumably from a wider Indo-Pacific area. In this case, the Indo-Pacific boundaries have been overlooked and are still misunderstood due to diverse causes, principally as the synonymy with the congeneric B. variabilis has created confusion in the taxonomic identification. The present review demonstrates that the borders of the B. pharaonis range are still unclear and that the species should be analysed in a wider geographical area. Records of B. pharaonis from Southeast Asia should be treated with caution as this area is out of its range. The Indian and Pacific Oceans host the taxon B. variabilis, composed of two potential cryptic species. Data from the literature highlight the importance of the integrative taxonomic approach to solving various issues concerning the species group complex, morphological variations and cosmopolitan claims of species.

Limosilactobacillus pontis (L. pontis) is a species of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) found in various products, including fermented milk, sourdough, and broiler chickens’ gastrointestinal tracts. However, the evolutionary strategies and genomic features of the species remain unknown, which limits its application. In this study, whole-genome sequencing was carried out to investigate the genomic characteristics and evolutionary strategies of L. pontis, combined with a comparative genomic approach, providing the necessary theoretical basis for its application. The genomic sequences in this study included three published genomic sequences and two strains isolated from fermented milk in our lab in Inner Mongolia, China. The mean genome size of the five L. pontis strains was 1.70 Mb, and the mean DNA G + C content was 53.06%. L. pontis was a species with higher G + C content in LAB. The phylogenetic evolutionary tree for the core genes showed that the strains from the same sources were aggregated into a cluster. There were some differences in the genomic information and phylogenetic relationships amongst L. pontis from different sources. An analysis of the annotation results identified differences in the functional genes, carbohydrate-active enzymes, and bacteriocins amongst different isolated strains, which were related to the environment. L. pontis was rich in glycosyltransferases, especially in strains isolated from fermented milk, indicating that they had higher sugar synthesis abilities. It is worth mentioning that only the L. pontis strains isolated in our laboratory identified the bacteriocin operon, which may increase its application potential. The genomic characteristics and evolutionary process of L. pontis were analyzed by comparative genomics, and this study explored the differences in the functional genes amongst the strains, aiming to provide new insights into the genetic characteristics and niche adaptations of L. pontis.

Red Sea Coral Reef Monitoring Site in Sudan after 39 Years Reveals Stagnant Reef Growth, Continuity and Change

Coral reefs off the coast of the Republic of Sudan are still considered to be among the most pristine reefs in the central Red Sea. The complex coastal fringing reefs, offshore banks, and shoals of Dungonab Bay in the north and Sanganeb atoll situated further to the south, about 23 km off the Sudanese mainland coast, were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2016. Due to their remote location and limited access, monitoring of the status of the reefs has been sporadic. Here, we present the results of a repeated large area photomosaic survey (5 m × 5 m plots) on the Sanganeb atoll, first established and surveyed in 1980, and revisited in 1991 and most recently in 2019. The 2019 survey recovered and reinstated the four original monitoring plots. Evaluation of photographic and video records from one photomosaic plot on the seaward slope of the atoll revealed general continuity of the overall community structure and composition over 39 years. Individual colonies of Echinopora gemmacea and Lobophyllia erythraea were recorded in the exact same positions as in the 1980 and 1991 plots. The genera Acropora and Pocillopora remain dominant, although in altered proportions. Shifts in composition were detected at the species level (e.g., increase in Pocillopora verrucosa, Stylophora pistillata, Acropora hemprichii, Dipsastraea pallida, and Echinopora gemmacea, decrease in Acropora cytherea and A. superba), in addition to changes in the extent of uncolonized substrate (e.g., increase from 43.9% in 1980 to 52.2% in 2019), and other scleractinian, hydrozoan, and soft coral living cover. While the temporal resolution only includes three sampling events over 39 years (1980, 1991, 2019), this study presents one of the longest time series of benthic community surveys available for the entire Red Sea. A semi-quantitative estimate of vertical reef growth in the studied test plot indicates a reduction in net accretion rates of more than 80%, from 2.27 to 2.72 cm/yr between 1980 and 1991 to 0.28–0.42 cm/yr between 1991 and 2019. We carefully conclude that the changes observed in the coral community in the plot in 2019 (Acropora–Pocillopora shift, increase in Montipora and calcareous algae) are representative of impacts at the community level, including rising sea surface temperatures and recent bleaching events.

Fish migrate for varied reasons, including to avoid predators and to access feeding, spawning, and nursery habitats, behaviors that enhance their survival and reproductive rates. However, the migratory ecology of many important fishes, especially those in river–floodplain ecosystems, remains poorly understood. One fish of the Amazon Basin whose migratory behavior is poorly understood is the catfish Pseudoplatystoma fasciatum. Here, we used otolith elemental microchemistry to characterize the migration ecology of P. fasciatum in the Amazon Basin. The main research questions of this study were: (1) does P. fasciatum move between waters with different Sr isotopic signatures (87Sr/86Sr) and chemical compositions? (2) What distance do they migrate? (3) Is the migration of P. fasciatum related to age? And (4) does P. fasciatum migrate mainly upstream, downstream, or in both directions? We assessed whether P. fasciatum migrates between waters with different 87Sr/86Sr values, comparing the Sr isotopic signature of otolith transects of each individual with the range of Sr isotopic signatures within the respective rivers. We found that 34% of the 71 fish analyzed migrated between rivers with different Sr isotopic signatures and 66% did not. The mean migration distance migrated was 126 km, with most specimens migrating between 72 and 237 km. Apparently, no fish of age one or age six or older migrated. All fish that migrated were between two and five years of age, with 20% of the specimens that migrated being two years old, 40% three years old, 30% four years old, and 20% five years old. Sixty-six percent of all individuals that migrated between rivers with different Sr signatures did so bidirectionally, while 33% moved unidirectionally. According to our definition of homing behavior in which fish migrated back to the same river where they were born, 41% of all fish that migrated displayed apparent homing behavior. Our findings provide insights into the migratory ecology of P. fasciatum, corroborating and refining knowledge reported in the literature. Our results on the migratory ecology of P. fasciatum have implications for sustainable fisheries conservation and management: conserving P. fasciatum requires habitat maintenance and suitable fishing practices in spawning and nursery habitats, and managers must consider large geographic areas for effective fishery management and conservation.

In Brazil, the Whitespotted Eagle Ray Aetobatus narinari is considered data-deficient due to the scarcity of basic information on its biology, ecology, and vulnerability to capture. Despite this, the species is caught by artisanal fishing along most of the coast, especially in the northeast of Brazil. This study analyzed mitochondrial DNA data in specimens of A. narinari caught by artisanal fishing in the northeast coast of Brazil to understand their population structure. For this, 42 individuals were sequenced at three mitochondrial genes: cytochrome oxidase 1 (COI), cytochrome b (Cytb), and NADH dehydrogenase subunit 4 (ND4). Concatenated COI-Cytb-ND4 sequences yielded 14 haplotypes, with moderate haplotype diversity (h = 0.646), low nucleotide diversity (π = 0.00087), and low fixation index ΦST values, indicating no population structure. Our results suggest that there is only one population of A. narinari in the study area. Genetic studies can contribute to improving management plans in these areas, avoiding the overexploitation of this and other species.

The genus Quercus, including species like pedunculate oak (Quercus robur L.), can play a key role in maintaining climate-resistant mixed forests due to its broad ecological spectrum and drought tolerance. Unfortunately, in some parts of Europe, clearcutting has drastically reduced the oak population. An example of this event is our survey of heritage Oak—Lime forests in European Russia, which were transformed into pure aspen stands. The aim of our study was to provide forecasts and silvicultural recommendations for the passive restoration of these forests. We took a chronosequence approach to assess changes associated with natural succession over 60 years. In our survey of the development of oaks, limes and accompanying tree species (aspen, birches, maples, elms), we used 190 plots ranging across a wide spectrum of forest disturbance due to clearcutting. We demonstrate that aspen reproduce rapidly by root suckers after cutting and occupy more than 60% of the space. But the dominance of aspen decreases continuously from the age of 30, and then the lime trees begin to dominate. Oak does not show successful natural regeneration. Therefore, we recommend planting oak seedlings or sowing acorns, i.e., active restoration, in combination with the natural restoration of lime.

Understanding phenotype variation is among the central topics in biology. We revise and reanalyze studies of the amphipod genus Niphargus to confront two potential mechanisms driving its phenotype variation, namely, cladogenesis and adaptive evolution. We found evidence for both mechanisms. Reanalysis of a subset of traits using molecular phylogeny showed moderate phylogenetic signal, consistent with the hypothesis that overall phylogenetic variation increases with phylogeny. The phylogenetic signal in Niphargus traits seems to be stronger at the tips of the phylogeny than at basal splits. Indirect evidence suggests that much of the phenotype variation can be attributed to adaptive evolution. Both lines of evidence are consistent with the hypothesis that Niphargus evolved in several adaptive radiations, where theory predicts that most of the phenotype variation evolves early, when ecological niches are vacant. As the niches fill up, the rate of phenotype variation slows down and becomes associated with cladogenetic events. This hypothesis can explain the high level of trait-convergence and unresolved taxonomy above the species level. The main caveats to these hypotheses comprise lack of experimental evidence for trait function and nonquantified heritable component of trait variation. Promising venues towards better understanding of phenotypic variation include studies of ontogenetic variation, functional interactions between traits, and genome–phenotype associations.

Aquifers are rich in microbial diversity. However, there is a lack of information about sessile communities in these environments because of the difficulty in sampling fresh in situ rock surfaces. Thus, this study’s objective was to better understand the sessile community in a fractured aquifer. Additionally, the impact of the rock mineral composition on microbial community composition during colonization was explored. Using a system of bioreactors, we recreated the environmental conditions of a 1.5 m deep aquifer in Covey Hill (QC, Canada) using groundwater samples collected from the site. We carried out 16S/18S rRNA amplicon sequencing of the water and sessile communities after 24 days of incubation. Our data showed that many microbial taxa overlapped between the sessile and planktonic communities, indicating colonization of the solid surfaces. Quartz and feldspar had a significant impact on bacterial community structure. Sessile communities were dominated by Gaillonella, Alkanindiges, unclassified Acetobacteraceae, Apoikiales, Glissomonadida, and Synurales. We could not detect any Archaea in the sessile community. The sessile communities contained bacterial genera involved in iron cycling and adapted to acidic and low-carbon-concentration environments. Eukaryotic predators dominated the sessile community.

Southern African grasslands with a rich flora, shaped by fire, grazing, climate and geology, as well as playing a role in carbon sequestration, are becoming more important in conservation. Fire is often used as a management tool to improve vegetation and to protect property against uncontrolled fire. We therefore attempt to determine the effect consecutive burning has on vegetation. Paired plots along firebreaks were used to collect vegetation data using the Braun-Blanquet cover abundance scale. Soil samples were also collected to determine the impact of fire on below-ground nitrogen (N) and carbon (C) stocks and ratios. The results indicate that there is no difference between the plant communities of the firebreaks and the adjacent grassland; however, there are certain species that are favoured by firebreaks and others by the adjacent grassland. There is also no difference in diversity between the firebreaks and adjacent grassland areas. Carbon and nitrogen stocks as well as C:N ratios did not differ significantly between the firebreaks and the adjacent grassland plots although trends indicate a decline in both C and N with repeated burning.

Decadal Changes in Benthic Community Structure and Function in a Coral Community in the Northeastern Tropical Pacific

The high diversity and biomass of organisms associated with coral communities depend directly on the maintenance or changes in the benthic composition. Over a decade, we evaluated the spatiotemporal variation in the benthic structure and composition of an insular coral community in the Northeastern Tropical Pacific. Our results show that local conditions drive spatiotemporal differences, and benthic organisms such as sponges, crustose coralline algae, octocorals, and hydrocorals all increased in abundance (cover) in response to negative thermal anomalies caused by the 2010–2011 La Niña event. In contrast, abnormally high temperatures, such as those recorded during the 2015–2016 El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) event, explain the loss of scleractinian corals and crustose coralline algae coverage, which reduced the benthic groups’ richness (BGR), diversity (H’BG), and evenness (J’BG), with evidence of a consequent decrease in ecosystem function recorded the following year. Our analysis also showed that sites with high habitat heterogeneity harbored higher average BRG and H’BG values and were less affected by environmental fluctuations than sites with high live scleractinian coral cover and lower BRG and H’BG values. Therefore, the benthic structure was impacted differently by the same perturbation, and changes in the benthic community composition affected the groups associated with the community and ecological functions. More importantly, regional stressors such as the ENSO event caused only temporary changes in the benthic community structure, demonstrating the high resilience of the community to annual and interannual stressors.

Advancing Conservation Strategies for Native Eastern Highlands-Strain Walleye Sander vitreus in West Virginia: Insights from Genomic Investigations and Broodstock Screening

Walleye, Sander vitreus, has several distinct genetic lineages throughout North America as a consequence of Pleistocene glaciation. Stocking walleye across genetic boundaries in the mid-20th century has led to the introduction of non-native strains that persist to this day. In West Virginia, the identification of the native Eastern Highlands strain led the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources (WVDNR) to employ broodstock screening to assist in the conservation of the native strain. To develop a baseline native ancestry prevalence in walleye populations throughout the state, 1532 broodstock were sampled across 17 sampling locations over a 6-year period. To evaluate the effectiveness of the current broodstock two-SNP qPCR assay protocol and identify whether more SNPs need to be implemented, 284 walleye were sequenced and ancestry-genotyped across 42 fixed SNPs between the two strains. When comparing the current protocol to the older microsatellite protocol, advancement in the ability to identify native-strain individuals was observed. Genoty** previously assigned walleye broodstock across multiple fixed SNPs revealed that the current ancestry assignment protocol, on average, assigned individuals that display 96% Eastern Highlands native ancestry to the native strain and accurately identified >93% of all pure Eastern Highlands walleye. Throughout the state of West Virginia, the New and Kanawha River systems contained a high prevalence of native ancestry, with the Ohio River and sampled impoundments displaying varying levels of ancestry. SNPs with >98% prevalence in individuals assigned to the Eastern Highlands strain were identified during the course of the study and can be implemented in future screening protocols. Our results highlight the utility of genomic approaches as tools to assist fisheries management goals and their capability to accurately identify native ancestry to assist in conservation efforts.

The identification of patterns and mechanisms of wildfire effects on biodiversity is of significant conservation importance. The research was conducted in a zone of mixed and broad-leaved forests. Carabid beetles were studied in eight sample plots that varied in relation to the 2010 and 2021 fires through 2022 and 2023. A total of 8667 specimens of 108 species of carabid beetles were counted. In 2022, plots were clearly differentiated by the pyrogenic disturbance in terms of the carabid species structure. As the pyrogenic disturbance increases, the total abundance of brachypterous as well as herbivore species decreases sharply. The carabids that were the most prevalent in an undisturbed forest (Carabus arcensis, Carabus glabratus, Pterostichus oblongopunctatus, and Amara brunnea) demonstrated sensitivity to the 2010 fire. The pyrophilous species Pterostichus quadrifoveolatus and Sericoda quadripunctata were attracted to a moderately burned area. Poecilus lepidus is confined to areas burned in 2010 and not affected by the 2021 fire. A moderately burned area was characterized by increased abundance and number of species. In 2023, the degree of similarity of carabid populations between sample plots did not generally increase, but only the 2010 fire was identified as a significant factor in population differentiation. The abundance of carabids decreased in a moderately burned area and an unburned area near the fire edge. The abundance and number of species increased markedly in heavily burned areas due to open habitat species, while the abundance of Carabus arcensis and Amara brunnea decreased in unburned areas. Forest megafires threaten the biodiversity of carabid beetles in pine and secondary forests.

The Aalenian–Bajocian (early Middle Jurassic) cooling event (ABCE) was a significant global climate disturbance during the Jurassic. Our analysis of sporopollen fossils from 18 mudstone and silty mudstone samples, collected from the lacustrine-terrestrial succession **shanyao Formation in the Santanghu Basin, Northwest China, revealed a total of 191 species belonging to 53 genera. We identified an assemblage, the Cyathidites–Deltoidospora–Osmundacidites–Cycadopites assemblage, which dates to the Aalenian–Bajocian (early Middle Jurassic). This assemblage can be further divided into three subassemblages in stratigraphic order: the Cyathidites–Osmundacidites–Cycadopites subassemblage, the Cyathidites–Cycadopites–Psophosphaera subassemblage, and the Cyathidites–Deltoidospora–Osmundacidites subassemblage. We applied the Sporomorph EcoGroup (SEG) model to interpret the paleoclimate features. The sporopollen fossils indicate that the Santanghu Basin underwent a shift in vegetation types, from ground cover vegetation as the dominant form to canopy trees and then back to ground cover vegetation as the primary vegetation during the Aalenian–Bajocian. The SEG model analysis demonstrates that the CCP subassemblage is characterized by a low lowland SEG/upland SEG ratio, low wetter/drier ratio within the lowland SEG, and a low warmer/cooler ratio within the lowland SEG. These characteristics reflect the vegetation’s response to the ABCE in the Santanghu Basin.

The collection of photos during the systematic monitoring activities is useful to witness the ecological role of marine phanerogams as hosts for a rich variety of organisms in coastal and transitional waters. Cymodocea nodosa is present in the Taranto seas. In Mar Piccolo, it reached high coverage in a short amount of time, up to 100%, due to the improvement in environmental conditions. The most recent observations showed that it offers a welcoming habitat for several vertebrates and invertebrates, native and non-indigenous, as well as to micro- and macroalgae. The NPPR-funded activities will make these observations more robust and structural.

Identifying Morphs of the Yellow-Legged Hornet (Vespa velutina) and Other Pests of Quarantine Importance with Geometric Morphometrics

We assess the accuracy of geometric morphometrics (GMM) for determining the origin of insects of quarantine importance using the Asian hornet (Vespa velutina Lep.1836) as a case study. This species is highly variable, has an extensive natural distribution, and has been transported to many regions of the world. Forewing landmarks were applied to a large sample of regionally specific color morphs (previously considered “subspecies”) from across the species’ native Asian range. We reconfirm that GMM can statistically distinguish geographic variants independent of the color patterns that have heretofore been used for provenance, but which have been suspected of being unreliable. Almost all morphs in our analyses were statistically different except the centrally located V. v. variana, whose range lies between the continental V. v. auraria Smith, 1852, and V. v. nigrithorax du Buysson, 1905 morphs, and the Malaysian and Indonesian morphs. Even with moderate-sized training samples, discriminant function analysis (DFA) was able to classify geographic morphos with about 90% accuracy (ranging from 60% to 100%). We apply these results to determine the origin of a dead wasp recently intercepted in a mail parcel in Utah. Both DFA and continuous-trait maximum-likelihood clustering suggest that the Utah specimen belongs to the nigrithorax morph, which is native to southern China but now invasive in Europe, Japan, and Korea. These results are also supported by DNA barcode analysis, which groups the Utah individual with nigrithorax populations in South Korea and Japan. The relationship between variation in wing shape and genetic differentiation deserves further study, but molecular data are consistent with the GMM results suggesting that morphometric comparisons may be able to identify and provenance intercepted specimens quickly and inexpensively when molecular sequences and taxonomic specialists are unavailable.

Fire in the Northern Alps is comparatively rare. Yet, previous human-ignited fire events in subalpine forests up to the treeline have triggered severe fire damage to vegetation and soil. Here, we investigate post-fire vegetation dynamics in the Northern Limestone Alps about 80 years after disturbance. We observed higher species richness in burned compared to unburned vegetation and clearly distinct floristic communities emerging after fire-driven forest removal, with several alpine specialist species uniquely found in the burned subalpine sites. The functional composition of vegetation was also distinct, with higher relative forb cover in burned plots. This difference was likely driven by disturbance-related environmental changes, such as increased light availability, offering safe sites for subalpine and alpine species. Due to a general lack of tree encroachment, we consider this a case of arrested succession after fire. We conclude that the recovery of fire-affected subalpine forests is modulated by complex interactions of climatic and biotic filters producing extreme site conditions, controlling the recolonization of the disturbed areas by forest species while providing safe sites for the establishment of a rich subalpine and alpine low-statured flora. The coupling of disturbance and abiotic filters makes high-elevation treeline ecotones very vulnerable to climate change.

The taxonomy of the tribe Fabeae (Vicieae) has long been problematic, but an analysis by Schaefer et al. in 2012 gave an exceptionally clear view of the tribe and noted the possibility that some nomenclatural adjustments may be required at some future date. These authors suggested several options, expressing some preferences. However, there has been a recent change to formally accepted names, implementing one of these possibilities, but without any additional relevant information. This change seems unjustified and unhelpful. We therefore present an argument for the retention, or re-instatement, of the genera Pisum, Vavilovia, and Lens until such time as new data support this requirement and there is no nomenclatural solution that is both accurate and convenient.
