Dear Colleagues,
Statistics are everywhere in medicine, whether to describe and summarize patient data or to conduct research, to use a diagnostic test, or to read an epidemiological publication. Their best-known expression is undoubtedly the p-value produced by so-called classical statistical methods; however, these methods are not without their limitations and have been criticized in numerous publications. In recent years, as an alternative, Bayesian methods have been used more and more frequently. Since the FDA decided to evaluate marketing applications on the basis of studies analyzed using Bayesian methods, these methods have enjoyed renewed interest. Very useful in the early phases (phases I and II), these methods are also highly prized in new forms of trials, such as platform, umbrella, and basket trials. These methods are therefore beginning to reshape the landscape of medical research.
In this Special Issue, the JCM invites authors to submit articles on the use of Bayesian methods in clinical medicine and clinical research in particular. Applications and illustrative examples in the field of randomized controlled trials, of epidemiology and clinical epidemiology or clinical medicine, in addition to review or articles contrasting classical and Bayesian methods, their use and interpretation, are welcome.
