Dear Colleagues,
Congenital heart diseases, most often diagnosed during childhood, represent an important health concern due to their increasing incidence and potential severity. Even with appropriate diagnosis and care, their effects may severely impact patient life during childhood and adulthood. In rare cases, severe congenital heart defects may remain undiagnosed for several years, and affected young adults may present with intractable heart failure.
Despite lagging behind adult cardiology, pediatric cardiology is expanding in several directions thanks to improved multimodal imaging, the approval of new drugs for pediatric use, and improved perioperative care. Cardiac magnetic resonance imaging brings relevant information in rare diseases such as arrhythmogenic right ventricular dysplasia/cardiomyopathy or ventricular noncompaction, while computer tomography has become indispensable to clinicians in conditions such as anomalous left coronary artery originating from the pulmonary artery. Genetic tests are now available, and efforts should be made to expand their use in more cases of dilated, hypertrophic, or arrhythmic cardiomyopathies.
The ever-growing access to interventional therapies has improved patient comfort with outcomes similar to those of classical interventions in certain diseases, while postoperative cardiac rehabilitation remains a challenge in some cases.
In this context, more research is needed that explores the long-term outcomes of diseases and interventions, the potential use of new technology, and the role of imaging. Innovations in terms of diagnostic methods and therapeutic possibilities in congenital heart defects and associated comorbidities represent the focus of this Special Issue.
